Important Travel Information

Nationals of third countries who wish to enter the Schengen Area to attend the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy, must apply for a Schengen visa for short stays.

In Europe, the term “national of a third country” is commonly used to refer to any person who is not a resident EU citizen and not a person who enjoys the EU right to free movement.

The need is waived for citizens of third countries that have negotiated a visa-free agreement with EU member states. All citizens of the Schengen Area are exempt from visa requirements.

The 44th Ryder Cup Matches will take place at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio, a Rome suburb, in 2023.

When the Ryder Cup was first held in the United States in 1927, it was contested by the United States and Great Britain at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts. The home team won the first five games, but after World War II, play resumed. Due to continuous American dominance, it was decided to begin including continental Europe in the portrayal of “Great Britain and Ireland” in 1979. The ascension of golfers from continental Europe was aided by the success of a new generation of Spanish players, led by Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido.

COVID-19 forced the postponement of the 43rd games of the biennial competition into 2021 from 30 September to 2 October 2022. The Ryder Cup pits male golf teams from Europe and the United States against one another every two years. Every two years, the competition is held alternately at golf grounds in Europe and the United States. The Ryder Cup got its name from English industrialist Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy. The Ryder Cup is co-managed by the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe, a collaboration between the PGA European Tour (60%) and the PGAs of Great Britain and Ireland (20%) and Europe (20%).

In 1973, the official name of the British Ryder Cup team was changed from “Great Britain” to “Great Britain and Ireland,” however, this was merely a name change to reflect that golfers from the Republic of Ireland had been participating since 1953 while those from the Northern Irish had done so since 1947. Since then, the European team has added players from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, and Sweden to Great Britain and Ireland players.

Europe has won eleven times in a row and once in a tie-breaker since 1979, whereas the United States has won nine times in that time. Compared to the United States two victories since 1979, Europe has won four times (in 1987, 1995, 2004, and 2012) on foreign soil (in 1981 and 1993). Between 1995 and 2014, eight of the ten Ryder Cups were won by Europe.

The Ryder Cup was played on the Straits course at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin, from 24 September to 26 September 2021. With a 19-9 victory over Europe, the United States won the competition with the most significant margin of victory ever (since the inclusion of Continental Europe in 1979).

The Ryder Cup moved to even years in 2002 after being delayed in 2001 owing to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Up to that moment, it has been performed every odd-numbered year. Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the event was postponed from 2020 to 2021, when it returned to odd years.

The Ryder Cup, its alternate-year non-European counterpart (the Presidents Cup), and its women’s equivalent (the Solheim Cup) are still exceptions in the world of professional sports because the competing professionals do not receive prize money, despite being high-profile events that generate significant amounts of money in television, sponsorship, ticket, and merchandise sales.
