Documents for a Slovenia visa application
The papers Slovenia requires for a national long-stay (Type D) visa and first temporary residence permit, from the official gov.si checklist.
Important
Slovenia's national long-stay visa (Type D) is for third-country nationals who intend to stay longer than a short Schengen visit and who will then apply for a temporary residence permit at a local administrative unit. Applications are lodged at a Slovenian diplomatic mission or consular post, and the exact document list is published by the responsible representation. Supporting documents generally must be translated into English or Slovenian, and originals are usually not returned (apart from the passport and original court documents).
The requirements below are taken from Slovenia's official long-stay (D) visa checklist. Every applicant must supply a core set of documents, and then add documents specific to the purpose of stay (employment, study, family reunification and so on).
Documents required from all applicants
- Original passport/travel document valid at least three months beyond the intended stay, issued within the last ten years, with at least two blank pages, plus a copy of the personal-details page.
- Fully completed, dated and signed visa application form.
- One recent passport-size photograph.
- Travel medical insurance valid for the visa period across the Schengen area, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 (emergency medical expenses, hospital treatment, and repatriation for medical reasons or of remains).
- Evidence of sufficient means of subsistence: bank account statements for the last six months and proof of regular income (employer's certificate or salary slips for the last six months).
Documents based on the purpose of stay
- Family reunification: original marriage or civil-union certificate, birth certificate for a minor child, and, where relevant, consent of the biological parent or a Centre for Social Work / court decision.
- Education or training: certificate of admission to study in Slovenia (or Erasmus certificates and learning agreement) and confirmation of any course payment.
- Employment / economic interest: evidence of employment in Slovenia plus the relevant ministry's letter of approval (e.g. Ministry responsible for the economy, education or culture, depending on the field).
- Diplomatic or international-organisation posting: a Note Verbale from the sending state's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Accommodation and guarantee
- A letter of guarantee, certified and registered at the relevant administrative unit in Slovenia, or an invitation letter, may be required where a guarantor provides accommodation or means of subsistence.
- For the residence-permit stage, proof of the right to reside at your address (ownership, lease, or the owner's written consent) is needed for residence registration.
