Eligibility for a Slovenia visa application
Who can apply for Slovenia's national long-stay routes: third-country nationals with a lawful purpose, valid passport, means, insurance and a clean record.
Important
Slovenia's national long-stay routes are for third-country nationals who wish to reside in the Republic of Slovenia for more than a short Schengen stay, for a defined purpose such as employment or work, study, family reunification, research, cultural or sporting activity, or a diplomatic posting. The governing law is the Foreigners Act (Zakon o tujcih); a Type D visa authorises residence for 90 days up to a maximum of one year and lets the holder apply for a temporary residence permit at an administrative unit.
Eligibility rests on both a qualifying purpose and meeting general conditions. Applicants must hold a valid travel document, demonstrate sufficient means of subsistence (at least the level tied to Slovenia's minimum income), hold appropriate health insurance, and show no criminal conviction in their country of origin.
Core conditions
- Valid passport whose validity exceeds the intended period of stay (at least three months beyond).
- A lawful purpose or reason for residence recognised under the Foreigners Act (work, study, family reunification, etc.).
- Sufficient means of subsistence for the whole stay.
- Adequate health insurance.
- Evidence of no criminal record in the home country, where required.
Purpose-based routes
- Employment / work, including the single (residence and work) permit for third-country nationals.
- Study, education and training, including Erasmus and other admissions.
- Family reunification with a spouse, partner or family member lawfully in Slovenia.
- Research, cultural, sporting, religious or humanitarian activity, and diplomatic or international-organisation postings.
