Who it's for

Non-EU nationals with a higher-education diploma enabling access to a doctoral programme who have a hosting agreement to conduct a research project at an approved Luxembourg research organisation.

Requirements

  • Valid passport
  • Signed hosting agreement with an approved research institute
  • Higher-education diploma giving access to a doctoral programme
  • Sufficient monthly resources (at least the social minimum wage for skilled workers)
  • Health insurance cover
  • Temporary authorisation to stay granted before entry

What you can do

  • Carry out the approved research project at the host institute
  • Reside in Luxembourg for the duration of the project
  • Benefit from researcher mobility rules within the EU where applicable

How to apply

Before arrival, submit the temporary authorisation to stay request to the General Department of Immigration, including the hosting agreement and supporting documents.

Visa nationals then obtain a Type D long-stay visa.

After arrival, declare your arrival at the commune, undergo the medical screening, and apply for the residence permit within 3 months.
