Documents for a Luxembourg long-stay visa and residence application
The core documents third-country nationals need for a Luxembourg temporary authorisation to stay, Type D visa and residence permit.
Important
Luxembourg's national long-stay procedure runs in two steps, and each step has its own document set. First you apply from abroad for a temporary authorisation to stay (autorisation de séjour temporaire) from the General Department of Immigration. Visa-required nationals then use that authorisation to apply for a Type D (national long-stay) visa at the competent Luxembourg or representing consulate. After arrival you assemble a further set to obtain the residence permit itself.
Requirements vary by route (private reasons, salaried work, self-employment, study, family), but a common core applies across all long-stay categories. Any document not in German, French or English must be accompanied by an official translation produced by a sworn translator.
Common documents for the temporary authorisation to stay
Submitted from your country of origin before travelling, the authorisation-to-stay file generally includes:
- A full copy of a valid passport
- A recent criminal record extract (or a sworn affidavit) from your country of residence
- Proof of suitable accommodation in Luxembourg (rental agreement, property deed, etc.)
- Comprehensive health insurance valid in Luxembourg
- A document certifying your marital status and family situation
- A power of attorney, where someone applies on your behalf
- Sworn translations of any document not in German, French or English
Route-specific documents
On top of the common core, each route adds its own proof. For example:
- Salaried work: a signed employment contract compliant with Luxembourg law, the original ADEM certificate authorising the employer to recruit a non-EU national, a CV and copies of diplomas/qualifications
- Private reasons (self-sufficient): evidence of stable, sufficient resources, such as pension entitlements or income from activity in the EU/Schengen area
- Private reasons (family ties): proof of stable, long-standing personal or family relationships and, where relevant, a financial guarantee from a supporter in Luxembourg
Documents for the Type D visa and the residence permit
Visa-required applicants present their approved authorisation to stay to the consulate with the Type D visa file; after arrival a further file secures the residence permit.
- Type D visa: completed and signed application form, a recent passport photo, valid passport with copies, the original and a copy of the authorisation to stay, and travel/flight reservation
- Residence permit (after arrival): full copy of the valid passport, a copy of the declaration of arrival, and proof of payment of the EUR 80 fee
- Biometrics (photo and fingerprints) are captured in Luxembourg once the permit application is accepted
