After you arrive in Luxembourg on a long-stay visa
Declare your arrival within three days, complete a medical check, then apply for your residence permit within three months.
Important
Entering Luxembourg on a Type D visa (or with an authorisation to stay for visa-exempt nationals) is not the end of the process — it starts the in-country phase. There are three sequential obligations: declaring your arrival, passing a medical check, and applying for the residence permit.
Until the permit is issued, your declaration of arrival together with the authorisation to stay serve as your right of residence.
Declaration of arrival
- Made at your commune's administration within three days of arriving
- Bring your travel document (passport and visa/authorisation), the original authorisation to stay, and proof of address
Medical check
- A medical examination by an authorised doctor, plus tuberculosis screening
- Results are forwarded to the Health Inspection, which issues the medical certificate needed for the permit
Residence permit application
- Submit within three months of arrival, online via MyGuichet.lu or by post
- Include a full passport copy, a copy of the declaration of arrival, and proof of the EUR 80 fee
- After acceptance you attend for biometrics and later collect the permit card in person
- The initial permit is valid for up to three years; renew within two months before expiry
