Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Luxembourg's national immigration decisions — the temporary authorisation to stay, Type D long-stay visas and residence permits — are handled by the General Department of Immigration (Direction de l'immigration). It is the body you apply to from abroad and the office where biometrics are captured and permits collected in Luxembourg.

It sets the requirements for each long-stay route, decides authorisation-to-stay applications, and manages the residence-permit lifecycle after arrival.

What it does

  • Receives and decides temporary authorisation to stay applications from third-country nationals
  • Underpins the Type D visa, which is issued by consular missions only once the authorisation is granted
  • Processes residence permit applications, captures biometrics and issues the biometric permit card
  • Manages renewals and progression to long-term resident status
