Appointments and biometrics for a Luxembourg application
The Type D visa is lodged at a consulate or visa centre abroad; residence-permit biometrics are captured in Luxembourg by appointment.

Biometrics and appointments fall at two different points in the Luxembourg process. The Type D visa is handled abroad through the competent consular channel, while the fingerprints and photo for the residence permit itself are taken in Luxembourg after your application is accepted.
Which consulate serves you depends on where Luxembourg is represented — in some countries it uses an external visa application centre, and where Luxembourg has no representation the Belgian diplomatic mission acts for it on long-stay visas.
Lodging the Type D visa abroad
- Apply at the Luxembourg diplomatic or consular mission in your country of residence
- In some countries applications are lodged through an external visa application centre (e.g. VFS Global)
- Where Luxembourg is not represented, the Belgian embassy or consulate handles the long-stay visa on its behalf
- You present the approved temporary authorisation to stay together with the visa file
Residence-permit biometrics in Luxembourg
- Once the residence permit application is accepted, you receive an invitation to provide a photograph and fingerprints
- Biometrics are captured at the General Department of Immigration by appointment
- The permit is issued as a chip card holding the biometric data and is collected in person by appointment
