Lithuania's national immigration authority is the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania (Migracijos departamentas prie Lietuvos Respublikos vidaus reikalų ministerijos). It handles identity documents, visas, immigration, asylum, citizenship, residence permits and the free-movement rights of EU nationals, and it monitors the residence of foreigners in Lithuania.

The Department was established on 21 May 1992. Its central office is in Vilnius, supported by territorial divisions across the country and, for applicants abroad, by an appointed external service provider network. Decisions on visas and residence permits are always made by Migration Department specialists, not by the service provider.

What it does

  • Handles citizenship, asylum, and identity/travel documents.
  • Runs the MIGRIS online system and territorial service divisions.
  • Oversees the residence of foreigners and analyses migration flows.
