Who it's for

Foreigners who need to stay in Lithuania for more than 90 days for a specific, defined purpose that does not require (or does not yet warrant) a temporary residence permit - such as a study exchange of up to a year, a research or teaching engagement, a sporting contract, seafaring, accredited journalism, or a posting by a non-EU/EFTA employer.

Requirements

  • Fall within one of the defined national-visa categories
  • Valid passport
  • Document proving the purpose (e.g. study agreement, contract, posting letter, authorship agreement)
  • Proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the stay
  • Health insurance valid in Lithuania and the Schengen area
  • Clean immigration record

How to apply

Applications are filed through MIGRIS at migracija.lt; since the procedure changed, the Migration Department (not consulates) decides national-visa applications.

Applicants submit the purpose document, proof of means and health insurance, and give biometrics at a designated centre or Lithuanian mission abroad.

A national-visa decision is typically made within about 15 calendar days for straightforward study cases, though timing varies by category.

  • Lithuania has no dedicated digital-nomad or passive-income residence route. Remote workers must fit an existing national-visa category or obtain a temporary residence permit; general remote work for a foreign employer is not a standalone ground.
