Documents for a Croatia visa application
The documents needed for Croatia's national long-stay (Type D) visa and temporary residence permit, built around proof of purpose, funds, insurance and a valid passport.
Important
Croatia's national long-stay route runs in two connected parts, both handled by Croatian authorities. First you apply for temporary stay (temporary residence) for a specific purpose; once it is granted, a national long-stay visa (visa D) is issued as your authorisation to enter and travel to Croatia. The document set is centred on proving why you are coming, that you can support yourself, that you are insured, and that your travel document is valid.
Documents drawn up abroad generally have to be submitted as originals or certified copies with a certified translation into Croatian. Because requirements vary by purpose (work, study, research, family reunification, digital nomad and so on), always confirm the exact checklist for your category with the Croatian embassy/consulate or the competent police administration before you file.
Core supporting documents
Croatia's Ministry of the Interior (MUP) and Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MVEP) set out a common core of requirements for the national long-stay route:
- Completed and signed application form (the temporary-stay Form 1a for the residence application; the visa D application form for the visa)
- Proof of the purpose of your stay (e.g. work/stay-and-work permit, enrolment, research host agreement, family relationship)
- Proof of secured means of subsistence to support yourself
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof that you have not been convicted of criminal offences (with exceptions for certain posted workers, students and researchers from the EEA)
- Proof of payment of the applicable consular or administrative fee
Passport and photo
Travel-document and photo standards for the D visa are specified by MVEP:
- Passport with at least two blank pages for the visa
- Passport issued within the previous 10 years
- Passport valid at least three months beyond the period of your temporary stay / stay-and-work permit
- Recent identity photograph meeting ICAO standards (colour photo 35 x 45 mm for the residence file)
- Travel medical insurance valid across the Schengen area for 30 days, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 (for the D visa)
