Eligibility for a Croatia long-stay visa
Croatia grants national temporary stay to third-country nationals who prove a purpose, funds, insurance, a valid passport and a clean security profile.
Important
Croatia's national long-stay routes are open to third-country nationals who are coming for a defined purpose — such as work or a stay-and-work permit, study, scientific research, family reunification, digital-nomad stay, or humanitarian grounds — rather than for a short visit. The general eligibility principles are set out in the Aliens Act and applied by the Ministry of the Interior.
The purpose of stay determines both the documents and where you may apply. Applications are usually made at a Croatian diplomatic mission/consular post before entry; visa-exempt nationals, and certain categories such as students, researchers, family members and humanitarian cases, may apply in Croatia at the competent police administration.
General conditions for temporary stay
To be granted temporary stay, a third-country national must:
- Prove the purpose of the temporary stay
- Hold a valid travel document (valid at least three months beyond the intended stay)
- Have sufficient funds to support themselves
- Hold health insurance
- Provide proof of no criminal convictions (with exceptions for certain posted workers, students and researchers from the EEA)
- Have no entry ban or SIS alert, and pose no threat to public policy, security or health
