The Federated States of Micronesia is a federation of four states — Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap. Immigration policy is set nationally under the Immigration Act (Title 50) and administered by the Division of Immigration in the Department of Justice, but several steps in practice — especially work permits — are handled by the immigration and labour office of the state where the activity takes place.
The Immigration Act also requires the President to provide by regulation for the annual registration of non-citizens, except those exempted by law or treaty (which includes US citizens under the Compact of Free Association). Non-citizens living in the FSM should keep their registration and permits current.
Practical detail — which state office to use, local forms and fees — can differ, so applicants and employers should confirm requirements with the specific state office as well as the national Division of Immigration.
