How to apply for a Dominican Republic visa or residence
The two-step system: obtaining an entry visa from a Dominican consulate abroad, then regularising your stay or residence with the DGM inside the country.
Important
The Dominican immigration system separates the visa (permission to travel and enter, issued abroad by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MIREX, through its embassies and consulates) from the residence permit or migratory status (granted inside the country by the Dirección General de Migración, DGM). Short visits by nationals of visa-exempt countries do not require a visa at all — travellers instead complete the free electronic entry/exit form (e-Ticket) that also incorporates the tourist card.
For visas, applicants apply at the Dominican embassy or consulate with jurisdiction over their place of residence, submitting the required documents and paying the consular fee. Once in the country on the correct visa, those seeking to live, work or study long-term must then apply to the DGM for the matching residence category (for example RT-3 labour temporary residence or a student permit) within the timeframe set for that category.
Because procedures, documents and fees are set by law and updated periodically, applicants should verify current requirements directly with MIREX (for visas) and the DGM (for residence and permits) before applying.
