Who is eligible and who needs a visa

Under Dominican migration law, foreign nationals wishing to enter the country must in principle hold a visa in their travel document, except for nationals of countries that have signed visa-waiver agreements for tourism, or nationals the government has designated as visa-exempt. Most visitors from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union and many other countries do not need a tourist visa for short stays.

Travellers whose nationality is not visa-exempt, or who are travelling for a purpose other than tourism (such as work, study, family reunification or long-term residence), must apply for the corresponding visa category through a Dominican consulate before travelling.

Eligibility for each residence category depends on meeting its specific conditions — for example a registered employment contract for labour residence, enrolment at a recognised institution for study, a qualifying family relationship for dependency, or minimum income/investment thresholds for the pensioner, rentista and investor categories under Law 171-07.
