MERCOSUR nationals: simplified residence
Nationals of MERCOSUR member and associate states get a streamlined residence route based on nationality, from a two-year temporary permit to permanent residence.
Important
Uruguay applies the MERCOSUR Residence Agreement, giving nationals of member and associate states a simplified path that does not require proving a specific purpose such as work or study. Eligible nationalities include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname and Guyana.
The MERCOSUR temporary residence lasts two years and can be renewed once for the same period; renewal must be requested within the 90 days before it expires. Holders can then move to MERCOSUR permanent residence.
Applications are made online at tramites.gub.uy for all offices in the country, with document presentation at a migration office.
Key points
- Open to MERCOSUR member and associate-state nationals based on nationality
- Temporary MERCOSUR residence: two years, renewable once (renew within 90 days before expiry)
- Leads to MERCOSUR permanent residence
- Permanent residence for Paraguay and Brazil nationals is exempt from costs under reciprocity
