Who it's for

  • Spouses and cohabitants of a person living in Norway
  • Children joining a parent in Norway (and parents of children in Norway, in defined cases)
  • Fiancé(e)s intending to marry in Norway, foster children and full siblings in specific circumstances

Requirements

  • A qualifying family relationship with the reference person in Norway
  • The reference person normally meets the income/subsistence requirement
  • Documentation of the relationship (marriage, cohabitation, parentage, etc.)
  • For spouses/cohabitants, meeting the applicable age and, where relevant, other conditions

What you can do

  • Live in Norway with your family member
  • Usually work and study on the family immigration permit
  • Build toward permanent residence over time (subject to conditions)
  • Victims of abuse may in some cases apply for an independent residence permit

How to apply

Confirm the relationship qualifies and that the reference person meets the income requirement.

Complete the online application on udi.no, pay the fee, and book an appointment at a Norwegian embassy/consulate abroad (or the police in Norway if eligible).

Submit the relationship and income documentation; if granted, the applicant receives a residence card.

Documents

  • Valid passport of the applicant
  • Completed application and paid fee receipt
  • Proof of the family relationship (e.g. marriage/birth certificates)
  • Documentation of the reference person's income as required by UDI
  • Documentation of housing where required
