Documents for a Norway visa application
The documents you must gather for a Norwegian national residence permit depend on your route, guided by a personalised UDI checklist.
Important
Norway does not have a single, fixed document list for its national long-stay routes. Instead, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) issues a personalised checklist once you complete an application form in the online portal, and the documents you must submit vary according to the permit you are applying for (for example skilled worker, study, family immigration or au pair).
Some documents are common to almost every application, but you should always follow the specific checklist for your route. Missing documents are one of the most common causes of delay, so UDI advises gathering everything on your personal checklist before you attend your appointment.
Documents most applicants need
These items appear across the majority of national residence permit routes:
- A valid passport (and copies of the relevant pages)
- The completed application form and the printed receipt/cover letter from the online portal
- Passport-style photographs where requested
- Proof of the application fee having been paid
- Documents proving the basis for your permit (for example an employment contract, an offer/confirmation of study admission, or documents establishing a family relationship)
Route-specific documentation
- Skilled worker: a concrete job offer/employment contract and evidence of relevant qualifications
- Study: confirmation of admission to an approved institution plus proof of subsistence funds and housing
- Family immigration: certificates evidencing the relationship (for example marriage or birth certificates) and documents about the sponsor in Norway
Translation and format rules
- Documents not in Norwegian or English must be translated by an authorised/certified translator
- Use the personal checklist generated inside 'My applications' rather than a generic list
- Bring the original documents to your appointment as well as copies
