Hungary's national process for long-stay (Type D) visas, residence permits and settlement is run by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság, OIF). It is an independent budgetary body with countrywide jurisdiction, operating under the control of the Minister of the Interior, and is the competent decision-making authority in Type D visa and residence permit cases.

The OIF handles the entry, stay, residence and settlement of third-country nationals. Its official website is oif.gov.hu, where its factsheets, application forms and appointment booking are published.

What the OIF does

  • Decides Type D (long-stay) visa applications and residence permit applications
  • Issues residence permits, residence cards and settlement/permanent residence documents
  • Handles accommodation notifications, extensions and other in-country immigration matters
  • Operates the Enter Hungary electronic platform for national applications

The authority serves clients through regional directorates and branch offices across Hungary. Its central contact address is H-1117 Budapest, Budafoki út 60.
