Eligibility for a Hungary long-stay route
Hungary's national long-stay routes require a lawful purpose of stay plus proof of subsistence, accommodation, health cover and means to exit.
Important
Hungary issues national long-stay authorisations (a Type D visa and a residence permit) to third-country nationals who intend to stay in Hungary for longer than 90 days for a specific, lawful purpose such as employment, study, family reunification, guest work or research. Each route has its own detailed conditions, but they share a common set of general requirements.
To have an application approved you must meet the conditions for entry and residence in Hungary and prove that you meet them through the mandatory enclosures submitted with the application. Meeting the general subsistence, accommodation and health-insurance conditions is required in addition to the specific conditions of the chosen route.
General conditions common to long-stay routes
- A genuine and documented purpose of residence (e.g. work, study, family reunification)
- Sufficient means of subsistence for the stay
- Accommodation in Hungary (ownership, lease, courtesy use or reservation)
- Comprehensive health insurance or the financial means to cover healthcare
- A valid travel document and the means to exit Hungary
Route-specific limits
Some routes exclude certain sponsors or applicants. For example, family reunification is not available where the sponsor holds a permit for seasonal employment, guest worker status, studies, training, traineeship or voluntary service.
