Hungarian White Card (Digital Nomad Residence Permit)

A residence permit for remote workers earning income from outside Hungary who wish to live in the country while continuing their work for foreign employers or clients.

Who it's for

  • Third-country nationals employed remotely by a company established outside Hungary
  • Owners of a profitable company established outside Hungary who work for or manage it remotely
  • Location-independent professionals who work using digital technology

Requirements

  • Proof of remote employment abroad (with authorisation to work remotely) or of qualifying foreign company ownership
  • Monthly net income of at least EUR 3,000 for the 6 months before entry, maintained during the stay
  • Proof of accommodation in Hungary (lease, ownership or reservation)
  • Comprehensive health insurance
  • Valid passport (valid at least 3 months beyond the permit)
  • Facial photograph and fingerprints

What you can do

  • Live in Hungary while working remotely for a foreign employer or running a foreign business
  • Extend once for a second year
  • You may NOT work for a Hungarian employer or acquire shares in Hungarian companies
  • No family reunification (except a biological child born in Hungary) and no path to long-term national residence

How to apply

Apply from abroad at a Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission, or inside Hungary via Enter Hungary or a regional directorate if you are visa-free. Completeness is confirmed within 21 days and a decision is issued within 30 days.

If approved from abroad you receive a single-entry Type D visa to enter Hungary; you must enter within 3 months of approval to collect the White Card, or it lapses.

  • Employer statement (role, scope, remote-work authorisation) or foreign company documents (registration, tax, ownership)
  • Bank statements / income certificates covering the previous 6 months
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Valid passport and facial photograph

Frequently asked questions

  • No. The White Card only covers remote work for a foreign employer or managing a foreign-registered business. Taking up employment with a Hungarian employer or holding shares in a Hungarian company is not permitted.
