Who it's for

  • Spouses and registered partners of an eligible sponsor
  • Minor children (biological, adopted or fostered), including dependent minors in the applicant's custody
  • A parent exercising custody of a minor Hungarian child living in the same household

Requirements

  • A sponsor with qualifying status (residence/settlement/permanent permit, refugee or subsidiary protection, or Hungarian citizenship)
  • Documentary proof of the family relationship (marriage or birth certificate)
  • Sufficient resources for subsistence, accommodation, travel and healthcare
  • Proof of accommodation in Hungary
  • Comprehensive health insurance
  • Valid passport
  • Parental consent where the applicant is a minor

What you can do

  • Live in Hungary with the sponsoring family member
  • Work in Hungary where the permit was issued through a single application procedure covering employment
  • Renew the permit in line with the sponsor's status

How to apply

Apply from abroad at a Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission, or inside Hungary through Enter Hungary or a regional directorate if you entered visa-free. Extensions are handled only through the Enter Hungary platform.

A decision is generally issued within 21 days, or within 70 days where the application also covers employment. Approved overseas applicants receive a single-entry Type D visa to enter Hungary and collect the residence permit.

  • Someone holding a residence, settlement or permanent residence permit, refugee or subsidiary protection status, or Hungarian citizenship. Holders of guest-worker, seasonal, study, traineeship, voluntary-service and White Card permits generally cannot sponsor.
