Estonian Long-Stay (Type D) Visa

Who it's for

People who need to remain in Estonia longer than a short-stay Schengen visa allows but who are not (yet) applying for a residence permit — for example short-term or seasonal workers, some students, business visitors, and remote workers applying under the Digital Nomad Visa category.

Requirements

• A valid travel document
• A lawful purpose of stay in Estonia (e.g. registered short-term employment, study, business)
• Health insurance valid in Estonia
• Proof of sufficient legal income to cover the stay (e.g. recent bank statements)
• A completed application, colour photograph and payment of the state fee
• Fingerprints, if not previously provided or if more than 59 months have passed

What you can do

• Stay in Estonia for up to 365 days within a 12-month period
• Travel within the Schengen area under the standard short-stay rules
• Carry out the specific purpose approved for the visa (e.g. registered work, study, remote work)
• Use it as a legal basis while transitioning onto a temporary residence permit where eligible

How to apply

Complete the pre-application in the Estonian visa portal, then submit the signed application with supporting documents. Applications are lodged at an Estonian embassy or consulate abroad, or at a Police and Border Guard Board service office (Tallinn, Tartu, Jõhvi, Narva or Pärnu) in the cases where in-country submission is allowed.

Apply at least 30 days before any current legal stay expires. The decision is generally made within about 30 days of the application being accepted.
