Vietnam Visa Eligibility Requirements

This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, Regulated Immigration Advisor. You can confirm current visa eligibility via Our Vietnam Visa Guidance.

Most foreign nationals require a Vietnam Visa to enter the country, including travellers from the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia. Some nationalities benefit from visa-free entry or short-stay exemptions depending on diplomatic agreements.

At Visa Applications, we confirm your eligibility, determine the correct visa type, and complete all necessary documentation to ensure your application meets the standards of the Vietnam Immigration Department.

Who Needs a Visa to Enter Vietnam?

Travellers from the following countries must obtain a visa before travel:

  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • India
  • Most non-ASEAN countries

The following nationalities currently enjoy visa-free entry for short visits:

  • 15 Days: Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the UK (temporary exemption).
  • 30 Days: ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

All visa-free travellers must still hold a valid passport (6+ months validity) and a confirmed return ticket.

General Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a Vietnam Visa, applicants must:

  • Hold a valid passport with at least six months remaining before expiry.
  • Have no record of overstaying or immigration violations in Vietnam or elsewhere.
  • Provide truthful and consistent information on their visa application.
  • Demonstrate financial means to support their stay (see Proof of Funds).
  • Have a valid reason for entry (tourism, business, study, or work).

Visa Types by Eligibility

  • Tourist Visa: Open to citizens of all countries not listed under visa-free exemptions.
  • Business Visa: Requires an invitation or sponsorship from a registered company in Vietnam.
  • Work Visa: Requires pre-approval from the Department of Labour and a valid job offer.
  • Student Visa: For international students enrolled at an accredited Vietnamese institution.
  • Dependent Visa: For spouses or children of foreign residents in Vietnam.

Health & Security Conditions

Applicants may be asked to provide:

  • A recent health certificate (for long-term or work visa applicants).
  • Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination (for travellers from affected regions).
  • No criminal record certificate (for residence and work visas).

Visa Applications will confirm any specific medical or police documentation required for your case.

Common Ineligibility Reasons

Applications may be refused if the applicant:

  • Provides incomplete or false information.
  • Fails to demonstrate sufficient funds for travel.
  • Has a record of prior visa overstays or deportations.
  • Lacks a clear travel purpose or supporting documents.

Our pre-screening process prevents these issues before submission.

How Visa Applications Confirms Eligibility

Our advisors verify:

  • Your nationality and visa-free status.
  • The correct visa category for your travel purpose.
  • Required supporting documentation for approval.
  • Consular processing location based on your residence.

We then complete and submit your application through the official Immigration Department system.
