In this post, we will go over the requirements for a UK study visa, the process for getting one, and what you can expect after you arrive in the UK.

Types of UK Student Visa

The UK government typically issues one of two visa types to international students, depending on the nature of their course and intended duration of stay in the country. Students taking a short course or studying the English language in the UK for up to six months are eligible for a short-term study visa.  These include:

  • You can pursue an English language course for a maximum of eleven months with a short-term study visa. You may apply for a Short-term study visa in order to study English in the United Kingdom. If your course is different, verify which visa you require before applying.
  • Student Visa: To enter the United Kingdom to pursue a college degree or certification. Previously, this visa was known as a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa or Tier 4 Student Visa. Depending on your native country, British embassies and consulates require a slightly different set of documents from international students, and you should contact your nearest British embassy for more information.

Confirmation of acceptance for studies in the UK

Before you can apply for a study visa to enter the UK, a UK school must issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Additionally, you must demonstrate a sufficient understanding of the English language and have enough funds to financially support yourself while attending school. Lastly, you must provide a certificate verifying your criminal history. It is important to disclose any criminal history you may have, as failing to do so could impact your chances of obtaining a visa.

What happens after I apply for my UK study visa?

After submitting your application, the visa application facility will ask you to provide your biometric information, including your fingerprints and a digital photo of yourself. In some cases, the visa application facility may require you to attend an interview. You should make preparations in advance and submit your application well ahead of your planned departure date. The visa application process may take at least three weeks before your application is approved.
