How to Apply for a Mauritius Visa or Permit

A step-by-step overview of applying for a Mauritius short-stay visa through the Passport and Immigration Office, or a work/residence permit through the Economic Development Board.

How you apply for Mauritius depends on your purpose. Short-stay visits (tourism, business, social, transit) are handled by the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO), while working, investing, retiring or long-stay remote work is arranged through the Economic Development Board (EDB) via Occupation Permits, Residence Permits and the Premium Visa.

For a short-stay visa, first check on the PIO visa requirements page whether your nationality is visa-exempt. If a visa is required, apply through a Mauritian diplomatic or consular mission, or an Air Mauritius office where there is no mission, and only as a last resort by email to piovisa@govmu.org. Apply at least one month before travel; the PIO aims to issue visas within about 12 working days of a complete application.

For work, investment, study or retirement, the application is usually submitted through the sponsoring employer, institution or the EDB Occupation Permit Unit. On approval you complete residence formalities with the PIO after arrival.
