How to apply for a Kazakhstan visa

The route into Kazakhstan differs by nationality and purpose: some travellers enter visa-free, short-stay visitors can apply online through the e-Visa system, and long-term categories are applied for through a Kazakhstani diplomatic mission or the Visa and Migration Portal.

Kazakhstan operates three broad tracks. Nationals of countries with a visa-free agreement enter for short stays without applying in advance. Travellers eligible for the electronic visa apply online, receive an e-Visa by email and print the confirmation to present on entry through a designated international airport. Everyone else, and all long-term applicants, apply through a Kazakhstani embassy or consulate, generally on the basis of an invitation or a permit issued inside Kazakhstan.

Long-term Category C visas (work, study, family, business immigration) normally require a supporting document issued in Kazakhstan first, for example an employer's permit to attract foreign labour for work, or an enrolment invitation for study. Once in the country for a longer stay, foreigners must complete registration and, where required, biometric (dactyloscopic) registration and obtain an Individual Identification Number (IIN).

Because entry rules change and depend on your passport, always confirm the current requirement for your nationality on the official portals before you travel or apply.
