Registration, IIN and biometric (dactyloscopic) registration
Foreigners staying in Kazakhstan beyond the short window must be registered by their host, may need an Individual Identification Number (IIN), and longer-term residents are subject to biometric (dactyloscopic) registration.
Important
On arrival, a foreigner's stay must be notified/registered by the receiving party (hotel, employer or host). Short visa-free stays are generally registered automatically through passport control, but travellers should confirm their status.
For longer stays and most administrative actions (banking, contracts, residence), foreigners obtain an Individual Identification Number (IIN). Kazakhstan has also introduced dactyloscopic (fingerprint) registration for certain longer-staying foreigners. The exact triggers and timelines depend on nationality, visa category and length of stay.
These in-country obligations are administered by the Migration Service under the Ministry of Internal Affairs; confirm what applies to your situation on the official portals.
