How to apply for a Bhutan visa or permit
Most travellers apply online before arrival; the route you use depends on whether you are a tourist, a regional national, a worker, a student or a dependant.
Important
For tourism, foreign nationals (other than nationals of India, Bangladesh and the Maldives) apply for an e-visa online through the Department of Immigration, either directly on the official visa portal or through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or hotel. The Sustainable Development Fee and visa fee are paid as part of the application, and a visa clearance is issued that is checked at the port of entry.
Nationals of India, Bangladesh and the Maldives do not need a visa and instead obtain an entry permit, which can be arranged online in advance or, for Indian nationals, on arrival at the port of entry on production of a passport or Indian Voter Identity Card.
Work, business, official, student and dependent visas are not applied for directly by the individual. They are sponsored and submitted online by the employer, inviting organisation, institution or relevant agency in Bhutan through the Department of Immigration's systems.
