How visa applications work in Venezuela — from the 2026 online e-visa system to the traditional consular route and post-arrival registration with SAIME.

How you apply for a Venezuelan visa depends on your nationality and the type of visa. If your nationality is visa-exempt for tourism you generally do not apply in advance and are admitted at the border for a short stay; everyone else must obtain the correct visa before travelling, as there is no visa on arrival.
In 2026 Venezuela introduced a fully online electronic-visa system for tourist and business travel, run through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Cancillería Digital portal. Applicants register, complete the form, upload documents and pay electronically. Other categories — work, study, family, investor and rentista visas — are generally applied for at a Venezuelan embassy or consulate.
For longer-stay categories, the visa is only the first step: after arrival, foreign nationals register and maintain their migratory status with SAIME, which issues the foreigner identity card (cédula de extranjero) and administers residence and naturalisation.
