Swedish Residence Permit for Family Members (Family Reunification)

Who it's for

Spouses, cohabiting or registered partners, and children of a person who lives in Sweden with a residence permit (work, Blue Card, researcher, self-employed, etc.) or is otherwise settled in Sweden.

Requirements

• Valid passport for each family member
• Documented family relationship (marriage, cohabitation, or parentage)
• The sponsor meets the maintenance requirement — sufficient income after housing costs, and adequate housing (waived for families of researchers and EU Blue Card holders)
• Each family member submits their own application form

What you can do

• Live in Sweden with your family member for the permit period
• Work in Sweden while you hold the permit (children may work from age 16)
• Extend the permit in line with the sponsor's permit

How to apply

Apply via Migrationsverket's e-service or on a paper form, normally submitted through a Swedish embassy in the family member's home country — applications made from within Sweden may be rejected.

The permit is usually granted for the same period as the sponsor's permit and cannot extend beyond passport validity.
