Processing times for a Sweden visa application
How long Swedish residence-permit decisions take, why times vary, and where to check the current estimate for your route.
Important
The Swedish Migration Agency does not give a single fixed processing time. It publishes waiting-time estimates per route and states that 75% of recently decided cases were decided within the time shown in its waiting-times table. The estimate is based on similar recently decided cases and is not a guarantee.
Times vary by route and by how complete your application is at the outset. A key way to reduce delay is to submit a complete application, so the agency does not have to request further information.
Route guidance from the agency
- Work permits: most people who apply to come to Sweden to work receive a decision within about four months.
- Family/'move to live with someone' and citizenship cases have historically been among the longest to decide.
- Check the live estimate for your route on the agency's waiting-times page or via your 'My page' account.
What affects your wait
- Whether your application was complete when submitted.
- Whether the agency needs to request additional documents or information.
- The route you applied under and current case volumes.
