The Border and Foreign Police under the Ministry of Interior handles residence, while Slovak embassies under the MFA issue national visas.
Important
Slovakia's national immigration process is split between two ministries. Residence matters are administered by the Border and Foreign Police (Bureau of Border and Foreign Police of the Presidium of the Police Force), which sits under the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic. Its Foreign Police departments receive and decide temporary-, permanent- and tolerated-residence applications and issue residence cards.
National (Type D) visas are the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MFA), through Slovak embassies and consulates abroad. The Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family is also involved in the work-related conditions, and the state-funded Migration Information Centre offers free guidance to foreigners.
Who does what
- Border and Foreign Police (Ministry of Interior): decides residence applications, captures biometrics, issues residence cards
- Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (embassies/consulates): issues national (Type D) visas abroad
- Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family: work-permit and labour-market conditions
- Migration Information Centre (IOM-operated, state-funded): free information and assistance
