Malta's national long-stay route is handled by Identità through its Central Visa Unit (for the Type D visa) and its Expatriates Unit (for the single permit, which combines a work licence and a residence permit). The exact document set depends on the purpose of stay — employment, study, family reunification, and similar categories each carry their own annex of supporting papers, so always cross-check the current checklist on the official Identità pages before submitting.
What follows are the document categories Identità lists for a national long-stay application. It is a guide to what to prepare, not a substitute for the official checklist that applies to your specific route.
Core documents (most long-stay applications)
- Completed and signed national long-stay (Type D) visa application form
- A passport valid well beyond the intended stay, issued within the last 10 years, with blank pages
- A recent ICAO-standard passport photograph
- Travel/medical insurance covering the applicant in Malta for the full period of the visa
- Proof of accommodation for the first period of stay in Malta
- Evidence of sufficient financial means for the stay
- Provisional travel/flight booking
Category-specific documents
On top of the core set, Identità requires documents tied to the reason for the stay. These are set out in the application's annex and vary by route.
- Employment: an approval/work authorisation from Identità or an employment licence via Jobsplus, plus an employer letter with role, duration and salary
- Study: enrolment or acceptance from a licensed Maltese institution
- Family reunification: proof of the family relationship and of the sponsor's status in Malta
- Notarised proof-of-accommodation declaration with a copy of the host's ID card, where a host is involved
Single permit (work + residence combined)
Where the purpose is employment for more than six months, the application is usually the single permit, initiated online by the employer and confirmed by the applicant. The Expatriates Unit publishes its own 'Guidelines on Required Documents' for this route, which the employer and applicant complete together.
