Appointments and biometrics for a Malta application

How Malta handles application appointments and biometric capture — at a mission or Visa Application Centre for the visa, and at Identità's Expatriates Unit for the residence card.

Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Where you attend depends on the route. The national (Type D) visa is submitted through a Maltese diplomatic mission or an authorised Visa Application Centre (VAC); where no Maltese mission exists, Identità operates a premium-visa process by courier. The single permit is submitted online by the employer, with in-person steps handled at Identità's Expatriates Unit in Malta.

Identità operates an official online booking system for Expatriates Unit appointments.

National (Type D) visa

  • Extended process: book and attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to submit documents and passport, then collect the passport at the VAC after review
  • Premium process (no Maltese mission in country): request a token by email, upload documents to the portal, pay, and courier the passport for the visa to be affixed

Single permit

  • Application is initiated and submitted online by the employer through the single-permit portal, then confirmed by the applicant
  • In-person document verification and biometric steps are handled at Identità's Expatriates Unit in Malta
  • Appointments are pre-booked through Identità's official Expatriates Unit booking site
