Icelandic Residence Permit for Family Reunification (Spouse and Family)

Who it's for

• Spouses and cohabiting partners of people lawfully settled in Iceland
• Children of residents/citizens
• Parents aged 67 or older, and parents of children under 18, in defined circumstances
• Family members joining an Icelandic citizen or a non-EEA resident permit-holder

Requirements

• A qualifying family relationship with a sponsor who is settled in Iceland
• The sponsor holds Icelandic citizenship or a valid residence permit
• Documentary proof of the relationship (marriage/cohabitation/birth certificates)
• Supporting documents meeting the Directorate's document requirements
• Payment of the processing fee before submission

What you can do

• Live in Iceland with the sponsoring family member
• Renew the permit while the family relationship and sponsor's status continue
• Accumulate continuous legal residence toward a permanent residence permit

How to apply

Applications are submitted on paper to the Directorate of Immigration by post, drop box at reception, or at a District Commissioner's office outside the capital area.

The processing fee (110,000 ISK for a spouse) is paid by bank transfer before submission.

Whether the applicant may remain in Iceland during processing depends on their visa status; visa-exempt applicants applying during lawful residence generally may stay, while visa-required applicants generally cannot unless already lawfully present.
