Requirements
- Citizenship of a country outside the EU/EEA/EFTA that is visa-exempt for the Schengen area
- Proof of remote employment with a foreign employer, or of self-employment in a foreign-registered business
- Documented monthly income at or above the required threshold (higher if bringing a spouse/partner or children)
- Valid health insurance covering the stay in Iceland
- Not having held an Icelandic long-term visa in the previous 12 months
What you can do
- Live in Iceland for up to 180 days while working remotely for your foreign employer or business
- Bring a spouse/cohabiting partner and children under 18 (subject to the higher income requirement)
- Travel within the Schengen area subject to the usual short-stay rules
How to apply
Applications are made to the Directorate of Immigration with proof of remote work, income and health insurance.
The visa should be obtained before travelling; it is a single long-term visa for the fixed period and is not renewable from inside Iceland.
Applicants who have held an Icelandic long-term visa within the past 12 months are not eligible to reapply immediately.

- Employment contract or proof of foreign self-employment
- Proof of income meeting the threshold (payslips, bank statements, tax records)
- Confirmation of health insurance for the stay
- Documents for any accompanying family members
