Processing times for Iceland residence permits
First residence permits can take up to 8–10 months; work permits are quoted up to 180 days and most renewals within about three months, with live status on the waiting-time page.
Important
Processing times depend heavily on the permit category and on how complete the application is. The Directorate of Immigration keeps a live waiting-time page that shows which month's applications are currently being processed for each category, so applicants can gauge where they stand.
Times lengthen when an application is incomplete, needs an interview, or requires an exemption request. The figures below are those stated by the Directorate.
Typical stated times
- First-time residence permits: up to 8–10 months, depending on volume
- Work-based permits: general processing up to 180 days
- Family reunification (first permit): average of 7.5 months for approved applications in 2025
- Most renewal applications: processed within about three months
- Permanent residence permits take considerably longer than a renewal
Good to know
- Paid expedited processing for work-based permits is no longer available
- The waiting-time page lists the exact month of applications currently being handled per category
- Incomplete files, interviews and exemption requests add time
