The Directorate of Immigration uses category-specific paper application forms (for example D-107 for work, D-101 for a spouse, D-208 for students). A correctly completed form accompanied by all required documents speeds up processing; missing documents are the most common cause of delay.
Requirements vary by permit type, so always check the document list for your specific category on island.is. The items below are the elements common to most long-stay routes.
Documents required for most applications
- A passport photo, 35 mm x 45 mm
- Photocopies of the passport's personal-information page and signature page (passport valid at least 90 days beyond the permit)
- The completed, signed application form for your category
- A receipt showing the processing fee has been paid by bank transfer
- Proof of secure means of support / income
- Health insurance valid in Iceland
- Confirmation of housing / accommodation in Iceland
Criminal record certificate
- Required from countries where you have lived over the last five years
- Submitted in original, with apostille or double confirmation (legalisation)
- Generally must be no older than six months
Category-specific evidence and translations
- Work: employment contract / evidence of the job (with the relevant work-permit documentation)
- Family reunification: marriage or cohabitation certificate and proof of relationship
- Students: confirmation of admission to an approved institution
- Documents not in English or a Nordic language must be translated by a certified translator
