Iceland's national immigration body is the Directorate of Immigration (Útlendingastofnun), which handles residence permits, entry visas and citizenship.

Iceland's national immigration authority is the Directorate of Immigration, known in Icelandic as Útlendingastofnun. It is the government agency responsible for processing applications for residence permits, entry (long-stay D) visas, Icelandic citizenship, international protection, and travel documents and passports for foreign nationals.
The Directorate publishes all of its official guidance and application forms through the national services portal island.is (its section is at island.is/en/o/directorate-of-immigration); its own domain utl.is directs to the same official information. Registration of legal domicile and issuing of the personal ID number (kennitala) is handled by a separate agency, Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá Íslands).

- Processes first-time and renewal residence permit applications for non-EEA/EFTA nationals
- Requests entry (D) visas from Icelandic embassies once a residence permit is approved
- Handles international protection (asylum) and refugee travel documents
- Processes Icelandic citizenship applications and passports for foreign nationals
- Publishes current processing/waiting times by permit category
