Processing times for a Finland visa application
How the Finnish Immigration Service estimates residence-permit processing times, when the clock starts, and typical times by category.
Important
The Finnish Immigration Service publishes estimated processing times per application category and updates them regularly. For each category it gives two estimates: the time it takes 'in most cases' and, separately, the longer time that applies 'in a minority of cases'. If your application is not decided within the shorter estimate, the longer estimate applies to your case.
The processing clock starts when you have proven your identity (at a Finnish mission, VFS centre or a Migri service point), not when you pay or submit online. Times depend on the completeness of your application, the workload, and whether Migri needs to request more information.
Typical estimates by category
- Employed person (standard): about 1 month in most cases, up to 2 months in a minority of cases.
- Specialist or start-up entrepreneur: about 2 weeks in most cases, up to 2 months in a minority of cases.
- First permit for studies: about 1 month in most cases, up to 3 months in a minority of cases.
- Family ties: Migri notes backlogs; the statutory maximum for family-based applications is 9 months (shorter statutory limits apply to student and EU Blue Card family members).
Things that add time
- Producing and delivering the residence permit card takes additional time after the decision.
- Requests for supplementary documents pause progress until you respond.
- Statutory maximum processing time for study permits is 3 months.
