Finnish visa resources
After you arrive in Finland
What to do once you reach Finland on a residence permit or D visa: collect your card and register with DVV for a municipality of residence and personal identity code.
Important
If you travelled on a D visa, your residence permit card is delivered to a collection point near the Finnish address you gave in your application, typically within about two weeks of the decision. If you did not receive your card within six weeks of the decision, notify Migri by email at migri@migri.fi.
Once in Finland, the key national step is registering with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV), which enters your municipality of residence and can issue your Finnish personal identity code.
Collect your residence permit card
- With a D visa, the card is sent to a collection point in Finland rather than waiting for it abroad.
- Check the card when you receive it - your personal identity code may already be printed on it.
- Report a missing card (not received within six weeks of the decision) to migri@migri.fi.
Register with DVV
- Book an appointment at a DVV service point to register your details.
- DVV decides whether a municipality of residence (kotikunta) can be entered for you, which enables access to municipal services.
- DVV registration is where you obtain / confirm your Finnish personal identity code (henkilotunnus).
