Austria's national long-stay routes are governed by the Settlement and Residence Act, and almost every residence title (Aufenthaltstitel) — such as the Red-White-Red Card, the Red-White-Red Card plus, the EU Blue Card, student and researcher permits, and family reunification — shares a common core of required documents. On top of that core, each route asks for its own specific evidence, and the authority can request further documents case by case.

First applications are lodged in person at the competent Austrian representation (embassy or consulate) abroad, which checks the file for completeness before forwarding it to the settlement authority in Austria. Documents in a foreign language generally have to be submitted with a certified translation, and foreign public documents (certificates, criminal-record extracts) usually need legalisation or an apostille.

Core documents required for most routes

Austria's official portals list the following as standard for a residence-title application:

A valid travel document (e.g. passport)
A recent colour photograph, 45 x 35 mm (ICAO/passport standard), no older than six months
Proof of legal entitlement to adequate accommodation (tenancy agreement or title deed)
Proof of health insurance covering all risks and payable in Austria
Proof of a secure livelihood / adequate means of subsistence (e.g. pay slips, pay certificates, employment contracts, pension evidence)
The duly completed and personally signed application form for the relevant residence title

Case-specific and family documents

Civil-status documents where relevant: marriage or partnership certificate, birth certificate, adoption certificate, or other proof of the family relationship
Proof of German-language skills (A1 level) before immigration, where the route requires it
For family members: evidence that the sponsor in Austria holds the required residence title
Many authorities also ask for a recent criminal-record extract from the country of origin or former habitual residence
