Processing times for an Austria visa application
Austrian residence-title decisions typically take several weeks, with a statutory maximum of six months from receipt of a complete application.

How long an Austrian national long-stay application takes depends on the residence title, whether your file is complete, and the workload of the competent authority. Because the consulate forwards the file to the settlement authority in Austria for the actual decision, the timeline covers both the checking of the application abroad and the decision in Austria.
The Austrian representation abroad cannot give information on the state of a pending case or influence its speed, so the most reliable estimate for an individual case comes from the competent settlement authority itself.
Typical and maximum timeframes
- The authority must decide without undue delay and, at the latest, within six months of receiving the application (statutory maximum under the Settlement and Residence Act)
- The migration.gv.at FAQ states the whole process takes approximately eight weeks, depending on the completeness of the application and the authority's resources
- Family-reunification applications are likewise subject to the six-month decision deadline
What affects the timeline
- Whether all required documents (and translations/legalisations) were submitted correctly
- The specific residence title applied for and any quota that applies to it
