How to apply for a San Marino stay permit
The steps to enter San Marino and apply for a stay permit or residence, and who handles each stage.
Important
San Marino cannot be reached without first transiting the Schengen area (in practice, Italy). Travellers who need a Schengen visa must obtain one from the embassy or consulate of a Schengen state before departure; visa-exempt travellers enter under Schengen short-stay rules.
Foreign nationals may remain in San Marino for up to 30 days without any formal documentation. Anyone intending to stay longer must personally apply for a stay permit (permesso di soggiorno) to the Gendarmerie's Foreigners' Office within 30 days of arrival.
Longer-term residence is granted by the Gendarmerie by reasoned decision, and the process also involves the State Congress and the Standing Council Commission for Foreign Affairs.
