Who is eligible to stay in San Marino
How nationality and purpose determine whether you need a visa to transit, and which stay permit or residence you qualify for.
Important
For short visits, eligibility to enter mirrors Schengen entry rules because you must transit the Schengen area to reach San Marino. Visa-exempt nationals may visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; nationals who require a Schengen visa must hold a valid one.
To stay in San Marino beyond 30 days you must qualify for a stay permit tied to a specific purpose - among them tourism, work, study, family reunification (spouse and children), cohabitation, and special categories such as sport, medical treatment, religion, humanitarian reasons and international volunteering.
Longer-term residence categories carry their own eligibility conditions: registered residence for family, business owners and company managers; elective residence for those making property or financial investments; and atypical residence under a facilitated tax regime for people whose income arises abroad.
