Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Applications for a stay permit or residence are submitted in person to the Gendarmerie's Foreigners' Office, which sets out the exact documents required for each permit category. As a baseline, applicants need a valid passport or recognised travel/identity document.

Depending on the purpose, further evidence is required - for example an employment relationship for a work permit, enrolment for a study permit, proof of the family relationship for reunification, or proof of investment or foreign income for elective and atypical residence. Atypical residence applicants must also hold health insurance.

Because document lists are set case by case, the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs asks applicants to confirm requirements directly via info@esteri.sm before applying.
