Important

This information is for general guidance only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee your application will be approved.

Whether you need a visa and which permit you require depends on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your stay. Travellers visiting for tourism or a short stay generally receive a visitor permit on arrival, while those intending to work, study, invest, conduct research, join family or settle must qualify for the relevant temporary resident or permanent residence permit.

Work is only lawful where the entry permit specifically authorises it; employment permits additionally require the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour to approve the employment of a non-citizen. Citizenship eligibility is governed by the Citizenship Act 2004 (birth, descent, permanent residence or marriage).
