Peru's immigration system is built around the concept of calidad migratoria - the immigration status assigned to a foreigner according to the reason and length of their stay. Statuses are broadly grouped into temporary categories (such as Tourist and Business, for short stays without paid work) and resident categories (worker, formation/student, family, rentista, investor and permanent).
The calidad migratoria determines what the holder may do in Peru and how long they may stay. Temporary categories are handled by consulates abroad, while resident categories are granted and renewed by Migraciones. Understanding which status fits your purpose is the first step in any Peruvian immigration application.
Main resident categories
- Trabajador (worker) - paid employment or independent services
- Formación (student/training) - recognised studies of a year or more
- Familiar (family) - close family of Peruvians or residents
- Inversionista (investor) and Rentista (income) - investment or pension/income
- Permanente (permanent) - long-term residence after a qualifying period
