How to apply for a North Macedonia visa or residence permit
The general route to entering and staying in North Macedonia, from short-stay visas applied for at a consulate to the two-step long-stay visa and residence permit process.
Important
Short-stay and transit visas (type C) and long-stay visas (type D) for North Macedonia are applied for in person at a North Macedonian diplomatic or consular mission that is competent for your place of residence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that a visa application must be lodged no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before the intended trip.
For any stay longer than 90 days — for work, study or family reasons — the process is in two steps. First a decision granting temporary residence is issued by the Ministry of Interior; on the basis of that decision the applicant is issued a long-stay (D) visa by the consular mission. After arriving in North Macedonia the foreigner then completes the residence-permit formalities with the Ministry of Interior.
Nationals who are visa-free for short stays do not apply for a visa at all for tourism or business visits within the permitted period; they simply enter with a valid travel document. A visa or visa-free entry does not by itself allow work, study or long-term residence.
